The Lady of Shalott by RottenRagamuffin The Lady of Shalott by RottenRagamuffin

“The Lady of Shalott” ~ A ballad by Victorian poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)

“But in her web she still delights,
To weave the mirror’s magic sights,
For often thro’ the silent nights
A funeral, with plumes and lights
And music, went to Camelot;
Or when the Moon was overhead,
Came two young lovers lately wed.
‘ I am half sick of shadows’ said
The Lady of Shalott.” ~ Excerpt.

The Lady of Shalott lives in an island castle in a river which flows to Camelot. She has been cursed, and so she must constantly weave a magic web without looking directly out at the world. Instead, she looks into a magic mirror which reflects the busy road and the people of Camelot which pass by her island. Source: [link]

The music that inspired this piece, before I had even read the poem is this piece of magic by Loreena McKennitt  [link] Listen~ then you'll understand

Edit 21/12/2011: The very talented :iconscarlettletters: has written a wonderful poem inspired by Tennyson's original. You really must read it! The link is in the following thumbnail -->

Forgive me if I'm a bit dense (I'm old).  Did you paint this or is it photo manipulation?  I saw it on the Loreena clip you mention later and it is exquisite

Beautiful work, I can't but help hear Loreena McKennitt's song in my ear as I look at this.

Thank you for sharing your talent.

All the classic attributes have been alluded to in other comments, way beyond my qualifications to add to it, so i'll just say i love the soft lighting and color, and wonder at at an image with so moch going on,and still very delicate and balanced, great job!

I like the detail
in the background
with the allusion to
John W. Waterhouse.

Mine too.
I like the
subliminal indications
of vanitas symbols
and the tragic story
on the quilt,
which maybe preceded
in her life.

Yes! There's so much more to see in that painting than just a beautiful, albeit distraught, woman in a boat.
